“My mom has been in Calusa Adult Care I for two years now. It's a small community. There are 11 or 12 residents. They keep the place very clean. The staff is good. They take really good care of them. It's like a little family. They're very kind. They bring them food from a local restaurant. They don't cook there on-site, so the…”

At first sight this is an impeccable home. However, one must look beyond the facade. I placed my mother at this home almost 2 years ago. In the time she resided therein, the caregiver turnover was amazing; somewhere between 12 -15. Not good. Furthermore the ratio of caregivers to residents is insane: 2 caregivers for 10-13 residents. More often than not they were too busy cleaning, doing laundry and preparing meals. Not good. Lunch was catered from a nearby restaurant but the menu rarely changed from week to week. There were no activities other than listening to the radio, watching TV or…

More often than not they were too busy cleaning, doing laundry and preparing meals. Not good. Lunch was catered from a nearby restaurant but the menu rarely changed from week to week. There were no activities other than listening to the radio, watching TV or staring at four walls. My mother loves to sit outside but many of the caregivers didn't have time to assist her or watch her. When I first went to see the home, the owner told me that she catered lunch so that the caregivers could devote more time to the residents. Well, that was one of many stories I was sold on. There is much more I could write about but I strongly recommend that when looking for an ALF, check out the AHCA website for information, read everything you are asked to sign, ask for immediate copies of every form and visit the home as often as possible. My mother walked in on her own and ended up in the emergency room, now in rehab due to a bad fall. Bottom line, do not take anything at face value and/or for granted. If it waddles like a duck, if it quacks like a duck.....

Not a good place to put a loved one. Beautiful clean home but the level of care leaves a lot to be desired. Big caregiver turnover, no activities, bad ratio of caregiver to resident: 2 caregivers for 12 residents. Revolving door of caregivers: 12-15 in the 18 months my mother lived there. Many were not properly trained and/or had no experience dealing with the elderly... Do your homework before choosing this facility. Take nothing at face value.

Amazing facility with a wonderful staff and very clean environment . my mother was in this facility for 6 years and we never had an issue like in other ALFS. i highly recommend this facility if you're looking for high quality care.

Seems impressive at first - very clean. Just wish they would dedicate as much time to the residents as they do to cleaning the floors. Very high employee turnover and innadequate staffing levels for the number of residents, resulting in mediocre quality care.

What families highlight

  • Clean, well-maintained environment
  • Caring, kind staff with a family-like atmosphere
  • Perceived high-quality individualized care
  • Welcoming first impression and presentation
  • Meals featuring local Cuban-style restaurant cuisine
